Solo law practice: AI checks email hourly, opens matters and drafts contracts

An independent lawyer in Oakland has Claude check client email every hour through Zapier MCP, log it in the practice system and do a first pass on NDAs or contract reviews.

The problem

A solo lawyer has only about 30 billable hours a week, and admin and first drafts eat too much of them.

What to prepare

  • A practice management system (like Clio)

How to do it

  1. 1

Start with the most common request

For example, a client asking for an NDA or a first contract review.

  2. 2

    Set up an hourly scan

When a client email can be handled, it creates a task, files it in the right folder and drafts, so the work is about half done when the lawyer opens it.

  3. 3

    Handle sensitive data first

For clients with strict privacy needs, remove client names from billing descriptions before the AI sees them. The lawyer reviews and finalizes every document.
